Fall 2016 Antiques Shows: Burton & Carmine

Here’s the low down on the Fall 2016 Antiques Shows in Burton & Carmine. Yes, they’re part of the lovable behemoth known as the Round Top Antiques Shows.

By the way, the venues are organized by the city in which their GPS address should show up. In the heart of the rolling hills, only the rural mail carriers know exactly where one town ends and another begins.

And a note on the photos…. These are scenes and vendors representing the entire Round Top Antiques Shows’ experience, not necessarily from the communities and venues we’re showcasing here.

Burton
The hamlet of Burton is growing its antiques show presence. The city proper is just north of Highway 290 between Brenham and Carmine; however, Burton’s postal footprint extends west.

In town, two new venues welcome shoppers this fall. Heritage Hall, which is opening in September in a former wood-floored dance hall (with air conditioning), will have five vendors including owner Diane Mayne’s Bee’s Jubilee and French Marigold. (12401 E. Washington; Sept. 15 – Oct. 1; 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Open Thurs. – Sat. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. year-round.) Just around the corner is Antiques @The Mill, which began as Rita’s Antiques. Housed in the former Knipstein Gin-come-feed mill, about 10 vendors offer farmhouse, country cottage and Texas trash antiques. (615 N. Main, Sept. 15 – Oct. 2; 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Open weekends year-round.) Both venues offer free parking.

Recycling the Past’s The PréludE, near the corner of Highway 237 and U.S. Highway 290, has an eclectic mix of offerings ranging from Matt White’s salvage collections to art, architectural antiques and gems and minerals offered by hand-picked vendors. Food and libations on occasion. (107 St. Highway 237; Sept. 15 – Oct. 2; hours vary.)

Carmine
Locals pronounce the name of this charming town CarMEAN, not CarMINE. (Now you’ll be able to talk like a native.) With businesses north and south of 290, the town has an active antiques presence year-round. Carmine’s footprint extends from town center south to 237, encompassing the Y at 237 and to the area near Antiques & Interiors, where Round Top’s postal footprint begins.

During show times, McCall Style, Unique Antiques and Carmine Trading Post (in Carmine proper) extend their hours for shoppers who may find it handy to stop in on the way to 237. McCall Style is in the turquoise building, which houses furniture, signs and an eclectic mix collected and staged by owner Paige Hough. (107 E. Thigpen, Sept. 15 – Oct. 2; early to late; open year-round on weekends.) Unique Antiques has been around since 1996 on Carmine’s main drag. Deanna Mesecke offers unique, quality antiques in her light-filled 3,300-square-foot storefront. (138 E. Sylvan, Sept. 23 – Oct.2; 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.; open year-round Friday through Sunday.) Carmine Trading Post operates from the town’s old lumber yard. Art and Veronica Weis welcome about 25 vendors during the show, which emphasizes vintage, rustic and primitive. (248 Centennial, Sept. 19 – Oct. 2; 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. year-round Wednesday through Sundays.)

Hailed as the show that started it all, the Original Round Top Antiques Fair is headquartered in the Big Red Barn. The venue attracts high-quality antiques dealers from across the country. Outside, the Continental Tent offers European antiques and collectibles. Also part of the ORTAF family is the show at the Carmine Dance Hall, which according to owner Susan Franks has fine smalls and great barbecue. (475 State Highway 237 (Big Red Barn) and 300 N. Haupstrasse St. (Carmine Dance Hall; Sept. 26 – Oct. 1; Monday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. (VIP passes available for early shopping 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.), Tuesday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Wednesday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Down the road is Antiques & Interiors, where owner John Aspley offers a representation of his 125,000-square-foot High Point, N.C. warehouse. European antiques, root sculpture, reproductions along with ceramics, terra cotta and original stonework grace the 10-acre site with plenty of free parking. (2110 S. State Highway 237; Sept. 16 – Oct. 2; 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.)
