Crockin’ Girls Coming to Round Top
The Crockin’ Girls’ story can be summed up as “small town Texas moms do good.” Nicole Sparks and Jenna Marwitz, the Crockin’ Girls are coming to Round Top, to sign copies of their books, It’s Our Crockin’ Life and Slow Cookin’ Companion at the Junk Gypsy World Headquarters from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 29.
First and foremost, the cookbook authors are hands-on moms. Nicole returned my call, then asked if she could call back because her 9-year-old son had thrown up.
As a mom, I can so relate! Those are the days that you need a slow cooker.
Nicole said she and Jenna Marwitz started out as friends and busy moms sharing recipes in Brownwood, a town of about 18,000 people located in west Central Texas. It was 2011 and they decided to use Facebook to share crock pot recipes. From Friday, the day they launched their page, until the next Thursday they reached 60,000 likes. Today their page has more than 760,000 fans—and they’ve just released their newest book.
“We self-published this book and have just finished up our book tour,” Sparks said. “We are so excited about coming to Round Top.”
Their first book sold 175,000 copies. Sparks said she thinks they hit a chord with parents, college students and others who are looking for ways to be more efficient.
“We do it all,” Sparks said. “We don’t cook in our slow cookers every day. We run through the drive through…and sometimes it’s a bowl of cereal. We are often asked to speak to mom groups—our message is not to hold perfection as the goal. It’s hard to find the balance.”
This will be Sparks’ first trip to Round Top and Marwitz’s second.
“We weren’t going to bring our husbands, but I think we may need to—and a truck and trailer.”
